ESCANABA -- A 59-year-old Escanaba man was transported to U.P. Health System -- Marquette by ambulance after being struck by a car while riding a bicycle Thursday.
At about 8:23 p.m., Delta County Central Dispatch received a 911 call regarding a car--bicycle personal injury accident at the 200 block of North Lincoln Road. Escanaba Public Safety officers and Rampart EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene of the accident.
When officers arrived, they observed a male lying in the roadway. The driver, a 36-year-old Escanaba woman, said she had been traveling northbound and that she did not see the cyclist "shoot" across North Lincoln Road from 1st Avenue North before the accident.
The cyclist was transported to OSF HealthCare St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group before being transferred to U.P. Health System -- Marquette for further treatment. As of Friday afternoon, the names of the cyclist and the driver were not being released by police.
In a news release, police reminded people to keep bicycle safety in mind. Michigan cyclists are required to have working headlamps on their bicycles at night. Red reflectors must also be equipped on bikes' rears and be visible between 100 and 600 feet away.
