Medical care facility marks 50 years

By Jordan Beck 2 min read

MANISTIQUE -- The Schoolcraft County Medical Care Facility (SCMCF) recently celebrated both its 50th anniversary and the continued support given to them by people in the area.

"We had a cookout for the residents and the community," Tonya Leik, administrator for the SCMCF, said. Live music and bounce houses were featured at this event, as well.

According to Leik, the SCMCF's mission is to help with the medical needs of local residents while partnering with various medical providers in the area.

"We work hand-in-hand with the hospital… to meet the medical needs of our community members," she said.

The facility is currently licensed for a total of 80 beds, up from 40 when it first opened in 1967. Long-term care, short-term rehabilitation, and respite care are offered by the SCMCF.

"We have an Alzheimer's/dementia unit, as well," Leik said.

Leik said the SCMCF was initially funded through a combination of a grant and a county-wide millage.

"It got started through funding through the state, primarily," she said.

The facility still receives some state funding 50 years later, but they are also funded through Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers.

In the short term, Leik said that the SCMCF hopes to make a handful of improvements to its current facility. However, they also hope to create an entirely new facility at some point.

"Eventually, our goal is to get a new building," she said. She noted that the facility has outgrown their current building, and that this building is outdated compared to the medical needs of those who use it.

Leik thanked the people who volunteer at the SCMCF for making it possible for the facility to provide the services they do.

"We have over 100… volunteers from the community that help support us," she said.
