Column: Making the move to Delta County

By Nicole Smith 3 min read

ESCANABA -- I grew up in Grand Haven, Mich.. -- Coast Guard City, home of the Musical Fountains, Pronto Pups, and sandy shores. More commonly known and simply said, I am a troll. After just visiting my hometown, the six-hour drive provided ample time to reflect on the place I was leaving behind.

Home is a funny thing to define as it has its complexities and uniqueness for every individual. I spent a handful of years trying to get away from the area I grew up, which I came to understand as a normal part of growing. However, each year brought more yearning to go back; desiring the place I called home, and finding renewed beauty in the area I was raised.

I returned to Grand Haven and regardless of the special place it held in my heart, I knew right away it was going to be a short stay. It is a beautiful place that anyone would be lucky to call home, but it no longer was home in the sense I was searching for. So, after a brief time traveling overseas, I found myself in Delta County.

I had always dreamt of living in the Upper Peninsula as my heart belongs to the woods and the water. I've spent the last year exploring God's Country and its splendor. I have enjoyed every ounce of learning the land, taking in the Yooper pride, and adopting the pace of life. It felt like an extended vacation--until now.

Now, Delta County is home, the home I was searching for. What facilitated the transition from a place I was visiting to a place I call home was becoming a team member at the Delta County Commerce Center. That may seem silly, but the connection and unity the Commerce Center provides in this community has a large impact. Over the past few months it has allowed me to be completely submerged in this community in a way I have not experienced elsewhere. Let me tell you--this community is incredible and full of dedication to continue making Delta County great.

I would like to extend an immense amount of gratitude to each of you in this community who is actively taking part in making this place a place people want to call home. Sometimes it takes an outsider's perspective to be reminded of the beauty that surrounds you. Take a look around and embrace your community this holiday season.
