Local Veteran Council meeting cancelled
ESCANABA -- The Nov. 14 Delta County Veteran Council meeting is cancelled. The next scheduled meeting will be on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Purple Heart Building, located at 1202 Sheridan Rd.
Cloverland American Legion to meet Nov. 6
ESCANABA -- The Cloverland American Legion Post 82 will meet on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Purple Heart Building, located at 1202 Sheridan Rd.
Operation Christmas Child event Nov. 11
GLADSTONE -- An Operation Christmas Child shoebox-filling event will take place at Grace Church, located at 528 28th Street in Gladstone, on Sunday, Nov. 11 starting at 11:30 a.m.
It is open to the public. There will be pizza, beverages, and snacks. Bring items for the shoeboxes such as bars of soap, stuffed toys (in new or like-new condition), deflated soccer balls with pumps and spare needles, yo-yos, school supplies, new underwear for children, t-shirts, shorts, shoes, toothbrushes, combs/brushes, small toy cars (new), etc.
Items not accepted include liquids, foods, candies, toothpaste, glass, toy guns or war-themed items.

Hiawatha VFW to meet
ESCANABA -- The Hiawatha VFW Post 2998 will meet on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Purple Heart Building, located at 1202 Sheridan Rd. in Escanaba.
Remembrance lights available for tree
GLADSTONE -- The Gladstone-Rapid River Kiwanis Club will hold its Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 23 at the Gladstone Beach House. The tree will glow with colored Honor or Remembrance Lights to recognize loved ones who have a lights purchased in their name.
The ceremony will immediately follow the Gladstone Old Fashioned Christmas festivities held in downtown Gladstone. Santa will be present, and Christmas carols will be sung by those in attendance.
Free cookies and hot chocolate will be served.
Honor and Remembrance Light request forms are available at Elmer's County Market, Viau's Supermarket, Pat's IGA, Gladstone City Hall and Rapid River Mini Mart.
Individuals honored with lights will have their names posted on the Kiwanis website, www.gladstonekiwanis.weebly.com. The Honor/Remembrance Christmas Tree will be lit from dusk to dawn each night through Jan. 9, 2019.
Rapid River Readers to meet Nov. 8 at Jack's
RAPID RIVER -- Jessica Zueller’s “Pretty Is What Changes” is choice for Rapid Readers’ Nov. 8 meeting. Discussion will take place at Jack’s Restaurant in Rapid River at 10 a.m.
The December reading selection is “Right Ho, Jeeves,” by Sir Pelham Wodehouse.

Lecture series at East Ludington Gallery
ESCANABA -- The East Ludington Gallery, 1007 Ludington St. Escanaba, will be hosting lecturers on the third Thursday of every month.
This month will feature Monica Mortel speaking on alcohol ink on tile. The lecture will be on Nov. 15 from 7 to 8 p.m. and it is open to the public free of charge.
Sit-n-fit exercise class
ESCANABA -- Fitness chair exercises to improve strength, stretching, balance, flexibility and muscle will be held every Monday and Friday at 11 a.m. at the Escanaba Senior Center. Sign in at the office. The event is free.
