ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Area Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) celebrated 45 years during their annual Election of Officers on Tuesday, May 8. The local AAUW branch received its national charter in 1973 with M. Jean Jokipii as the founding president.
Judy Fouts and Liz LaBay were elected to the board. President Margaret Carignan presented Sharon Gray with the Member of the Year award. Gray has been an AAUW member since 2013. She is currently serving as membership VP, and has been instrumental in increasing membership for the local AAUW branch.
Gray received her associate degree in accounting from Bay College and a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Lake Superior State University. As a non-traditional student, she credits AAUW as inspiring her to pursue her goal of higher education. Gray states that,” Empowering women and girls is the cornerstone of AAUW’s mission.”
AAUW is open to men and women holding an Associate’s Degree or higher. For more information, call 474-6545.
