Sports Flashback Nov. 23-29

Nov. 24, 1965 — Paul Miller’s 27 points were enough to lead the Escanaba Eskymos to an 82-64 basketball triumph over Marquette. Dave Nyquist added 20 and Jim Boyle tallied 16.

Doug LaCoursier scored 23 points, helping the Hermansville Redskins roll past Pembine, Wis. 82-40. Randy Fochesato hit 15 and Henry Gordon had 12.

The Carney-Nadeau Wolves improved to 2-0 this season as they romped past the Felch Forresters 87-57. Doug Benson led the way with 28 points. Brian Forgette collected 13 points and 19 rebounds. Tim Moran and Mel Buckmaster finished with 11 apiece.

Nov. 26, 1965 — Bruce Pesola hit 25 points to lead coach Fred Boddy’s Marquette Bishop Baraga Royals to an 84-50 victory over the Holy Name Crusaders. Tom Menard paced the Crusaders with 11 and Tom Plouff finished with 10.

Jim Sefcik drained a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining, helping coach Seb Rubick’s Nahma Arrows preserve a 64-61 triumph over the Eben Eagles. RIch Shafer led Nahma with 24 points and 16 boards.

Nov. 25, 1970 — Gary Praznik poured in 35 points, leading the Trenary Comets to an 86-74 victory over Eben. Dave Mariin added 19. Al Hager scored 16 and Ken Mills had 12. Joe Goin was Eben’s leader with 29. Duane Ruska hit 12 and Bob Maki finished with 10.

Tony VanDamme paced the Rock Little Giants with 28 points in a 93-67 conquest of Perkins. Bruce Nummilien scored 16. Tim Connors tallied 15 and Craig Westlund chipped in with 12. Gary Lauscher and Dwayne Coulliard led the Yellowjackets with 17 apiece. Joe Lauscher tossed in 12 and Terry Lauscher had 11.

Nov. 28, 1970 — The Bay de Noc Community College Norsemen opened their season in a 96-47 rout of Wisconsin-Marinette. Darrel LaVigne led Bay with 20 points. John Fazer scored 18 and Steve Fisher finished with 15.

Nov. 24, 1975 — Two Upper Peninsula football teams were crowned champions in the inaugural state finals. Mike Dellangelo rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns as Ishpeming upended Hudson 38-22 in the Class C final, ending the Tigers’ 72-game winning streak. Bill Santilli ran for 179 yards and three scores, leading Crystal Falls Forest Park past Flint Holy Rosary 50-0 for the Class D title.

Nov. 25, 1975 — The Perkins girls recorded their 16th consecutive basketball victory, rolling past the Rapid River Rockets 60-31 for the Class D district title. Lynette Royer led the Yellowjackets with 18 points and Diane Johnson added 11. Patty Thibault was Rapid River’s scoring leader with eight.

The Gladstone Braves weren’t as fortunate as they dropped a 42-37 decision to the Gwinn Modeltowners in a Class B final. Gwinn’s Barb Allyn hit 20 points and Beth Lilly had 16. Ann Altese led the Braves with 13.
