Manistique tops Petoskey in 6-0 hockey triumph

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Emeralds put together a workmanlike performance and were rewarded with a 6-0 hockey triumph over the Petoskey Northman in their regular-season home finale here Saturday.

Manistique carried the play throughout, outshooting the young Northmen 51-8 on Senior Day for their fifth straight victory.

“We’re really working hard,” said Emeralds’ coach John Nutkins. “We’re trying to stress defense and I thought we had a real good forecheck today. We had a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Junior defenseman Carsyn Hinkson opened the scoring from inside the left faceoff circle on a power play 11 minutes, 48 seconds into the contest.

Sophomore forward Carter LaVigne gave the Emeralds (13-5-1) a two-goal cushion on a 2-on-1 breakaway, scoring from the left side on a pass from senior forward Stephen Allen with 18 seconds remaining in the first period.

“The second goal was beautiful,” said Nutkins. “That was a very unselfish play. They lost a lot of kids from last year, but their senior goaltender and freshman back-up really did well this year. We really had to work for our goals.”

Junior forward Gavin Nutkins added a goal from the low slot for a 3-0 lead 10:45 into the second stanza and senior forward Chazze Bultema scored from the low slot for a 4-0 advantage at 12:51.

Junior Blake Walther added the fifth goal and Gavin Nutkins finished the scoring from inside the left circle with 52 seconds left to play.

“We tried to keep them outside,” said Petoskey coach Mike McKillip. “We tried to be physical and slow them down. It’s a work in progress.”

Senior goaltender Joseph Wolfe stopped 45 shots for Petoskey (3-16), which will try to end a seven-game losing streak Wednesday when it hosts Traverse City Central.

“He has improved dramatically,” said McKillip. “Joe has come into his own. He comes ready to work everyday. We played our back-up last night (in Friday’s 8-0 loss at Negaunee). Joe was our back-up last year. It has been a good, competitive battle this year. Our freshman (Nicklas Timm) has been able to learn from our senior.”

The Emeralds travel to Gaylord Saturday.
