Braves XC practice

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves cross country program will hold its first practice of the 2021 season Monday, August 9th, at the Gladstone pavilion.

Practice will begin at 8 a.m.

Esky football

ESCANABA — Escanaba High School varsity, JV, and freshman football teams will begin the 2021 football season with summer practice on August 9th at 3 p.m. for all three levels.

All practices will be held at the Escanaba Athletic Field. Practices for the first week will be scheduled from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Athletes should bring workout clothes, football cleats and a light snack as there will be a short break in between practices.

All other football equipment will be provided by the school.

All athletes must have a sports physical on file to start practice on August 9th.

This physical must be dated after April 15, 2021 to be valid for the fall football season.

Lastly, there will be a parent meeting for all 9-12 grade football players on Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the locker room area at the Escanaba Athletic Field.

At least one parent should plan on attending this meeting.

Gladstone football

GLADSTONE — There will be a parent/player meeting for Gladstone High School Football grades 9-12 this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Marble Athletic Field facility in Gladstone.

Topics to be discussed will be the practice/game schedules for JV and Varsity as well as team rules.

All prospective players and their parents are welcome to attend.

Eichhorn earns all

academic honors

ESCANABA — Hunter Eichhorn and three of his Marquette University golf teammates have been named academic All-Americans.

Eichhorn, who will be a senior this fall, is joined by teammates Nicolas Evangelio, Aidan Lafferty and Tyler Leach as scholastic all-stars.

Eichhorn is a two-time Big East Conference player of the year. He won the men’s U.P. golf tournament in 2018.

Academic all-stars must have a scoring average of 76.0 or better, play in 40 percent of their team’s rounds and have a minimum 3.2 GPA.

Meanwhile, Gladstone native Becky Iverson tied for 32nd in the recent U.S. Women’s Senior Open golf tournament. Iverson, a 2015 U.P. Sports Hall of Fame inductee, is director of golf at The Bridges Golf Club in Madison, Wis. She won the U.P. Ladies Golf Association title in 1988.

Sue Ginter, a Green Bay native and former participant in the Symetra Tour event at Sweetgrass, tied for 26th at the Senior Open.

GGC scores

GLADSTONE — Steve Bratonia shot 70 to lead the Gladstone Golf Club Senior Men’s League this week.

Mark Hager 73 was second with Kelly Shea and Wayne Marshall tied at 75 in third.

Dwayne Couillard 76, Bill Swartz and Dale Hongisto at 77 and Troy Carlson and Dick Pepin at 79 rounded out the scores.

Korey Smith shot 39 to lead the 9-Hole Men’s League.
