Bark River baseball splits with Knights

NORWAY — The visiting Bark River-Harris Broncos scored eight runs in the top half of the final inning in game one of a doubleheader, to come from behind to defeat Norway, 12-5 at Mike Maule Field in Marion Park on Monday evening.

The host Knights powered past the Broncos in game two of the Skyline Central Conference twin bill, 17-5 in four innings.

“We did enough to have a lead, and we couldn’t get the three outs we needed. Give credit to a well-coached, experienced Bark River team. They put pressure on us, and we lost our composure, said Norway head coach Tony Adams.

Catcher Chase Carlson had two RBIs for Norway, while shortstop Nick Javurek, who cracked a triple, had a game-high three for the Broncos. Zack Robinette, Carter Zawacki and Josiah Javurek each had a pair of RBIs for BR-H. Zawacki also hit a triple.

Josiah Javurek and Robinette each hit home runs for the Broncos off of Knights starter Gannon Bray. The Knights senior fanned five while walking three and allowing four runs, all earned.

Tyler Racicot toed the mound to start the game for Bark River-Harris, giving up five runs, four earned. He fanned four and walked three.

Nolan Amundson and Isaac Lorenzoni also pitched for the Knights, with Lorenzoni taking the loss.

“We battled in the first one and ended up winning,” said Broncos coach Al Botwright. “I don’t think any of us played our best ball games. (We) jumped to an early lead. We made too many errors and didn’t throw enough strikes.

“First game, we hit the ball quite well (but) just kind of struggled. Zach Robinette and Joe Javurek had good nights at the plate. Offensively, they sparked us.”

In game two, Carlson led Norway with four RBIs, and Michael Peterson had three hits including a double. Also for Norway, sophomore Tyler Neuens had 3 RBIs, while teammates Lorenzoni, Bray and Jake Baciak each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Max Hall toed the mound or the Broncos to start the game, with Zawacki and Keaton Bartozsek also pitching, with Bartozsek the losing pitcher of record.

“Second game, we couldn’t throw any strikes, couldn’t hit the ball or make enough plays,” said Botwright. ” Norway is always good. They’re one of the best teams in the U.P. every year. They’re always a handful every time we play them. They’re well-coached and have a good system.”

Lorenzoni started the game on the hill for Norway, with freshman Ian Popp pitching in relief and taking the win.

“We had lots of contributions in game two, and our energy level was up. Doubleheaders are a long day, and we handled it well today. We are making progress in several areas as the season progresses,” Adams stated.

Bark River visits Gladstone Monday. Norway returns to action this afternoon as they make the short trip to take on non-conference foe Niagara.
