Munising at Rapid River
RAPID RIVER — The Rapid River boys basketball team earned a 66-59 win over Munising Tuesday at Rapid River.
“It was kind of unexpected, really,” Rockets coach Rich Poma said. “We played them last Monday and they took it to us.
“As far as tonight goes, I think I’m the most pleased I’ve ever been. The resilience and teamwork down the stretch was awesome from everybody.
“Parker Dausey and Chris Platt came off the bench and made a big difference. Everybody, everybody, had a huge role in it. It was just a solid team win from start to finish.”
Mason Kudlick led the Rockets with 17 points and three treys, and Max Lenaker followed closely with 15 points and three triples. Reese Dawley collected 11.

FELCH — The North Central Jets boy’s basketball team (1-3) notched their first win of the season, 61-19, over the North Dickinson Nordics Tuesday night in Felch.
“We played a little better tonight. Our defensive intensity was really good to start the game, and that carried over into offensive execution,” said Jets coach Mike Malone. “Though we did turn the ball over more than we should have, (we were) a little careless at times, we did a much better job today offensively. We also shot the ball pretty good in the first half.
“So, all in all, definitely something to build on”
Ian Gorzinski (11), Luke Gorzinski (10), and Jesse Sampson (10) each put up at least 10 points for the Jets in the game.

Hannahville at Carney-Nadeau
CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team triumphed over Hannahville 68-58 for its first win of the season Wednesday at Carney.
“They shoot a lot of 3’s,” Wolves coach Paul Polfus said. “At times, we didn’t defend it the best. They came out and played pretty well. A switch to man (coverage) helped.”
The Wolves (1-3) took the lead in the first quarter, 17-14, and refused to let it go. They outscored the Soaring Eagles 21-13 in the second and 26-16 in the third to seal the game.
“They’re a very competent team,” Polfus said. “They play hard, they’re well-coached and they penetrated when they got the chance.
“It was a good game to win to finally get one under our belts.
“We shot the ball well, and Beau Koffman had by far the best game of the year for us. Kakuk also played well for us. It was a good win after three tough games.”
Koffman led the Wolves with 31 points, five triples and nine rebounds. Brayden Kakuk also notched 15.

Girls
Manistique at Engadine
ENGADINE — The Manistique girls basketball team edged Engadine 37-34 Tuesday at Engadine.
The Emeralds fought back at the half to lead 19-18 but were edged out in the third quarter, 29-28.
Manistique locked down in the fourth, allowing only five points and earning nine of their own thanks to two buckets and going five-for-nine from the charity stripe.
“Engadine has always been a physical team with a lot of energy toughness,” Emeralds coach Jenna Bradshaw said. “We haven’t won in that gym, I think, for almost five years, so it was still nice to get the ‘W’. We still have lots to work on leading up to our next two games (Monday in Munising and Tuesday home against Ishpeming).
“We are still struggling to put the ball in the hoop. We execute our offenses effectively and give ourselves wide-open opportunities, but we don’t make the basket.”
Brooke St. John led the Emeralds with 17 points.

Gymnastics
Escanaba at Howell and Coldwater
HOWELL and COLDWATER — The Escanaba Eskymo gymnastics team had four compete in Howell on Friday — where the team finished third out of five — and Coldwater on Saturday, where the results are currently unavailable.
However, the gymnasts earned 21 regional qualifying scores between them in 32 attempts.
Esky head gymnastics coach Theresa Pasco said, “The Fab Four. I am very proud of these girls for improving one meet at a time. These girls come downstate and perform routines for people that have never seen them. Plus, the girls have a springfloor downstate. The girls watch the other teams compete, and it sparks new ideas. We have already been working on new leap and jump combinations. It’s a joy to watch them compete.”
The four gymnasts had success in the back-to-back meets.
Abigail Rexford received two regional qualifying scores, both on vault.
“I started with a lot of hesitation with vault, but I’m so happy I did it,” she said. “It was amazing to watch the different levels of girls compete.”
Bridget Bichler received two qualifying scores on vault, two on floor, one on bars, and one on beam.
“It was very exciting to go to my first downstate meet as an Eskymo, and qualify on all four events,” she said. “I can’t wait for regionals.”.
Rylie Martin had two qualifying scores on vault, one on beam, and two on floor.
“Being a freshman, I was excited to qualify this many times,” she said. “I can’t wait for the next three years.”
Leading the way for the Eskymos was Lizzy Sliva. Sliva qualified two on floor, two on beam, two on vault and two on bars.
“I loved competing downstate last year,” she said. “The atmosphere was just so different this year. I was very happy to see that I qualified on all my events.”
Esky was without Caitlyn Davenport due to an injury, Aliyah Mylander due to prior obligations and Hayley Garcia who was unavailable.
Escanaba visits Marquette Friday.
