CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau Wolves reached a major goal here Wednesday night, earning their fourth consecutive Skyline Central Conference volleyball title with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) triumph over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

“This is very exciting,” said C-N senior Taylor Kedsch, who collected 12 kills and 21 digs. “This is something we’ve been working for basically through our high school career. Both teams worked hard. They (BR-H) have come a long way. They’re by far a better team than they were last year.”

The Broncos, taking advantage of a variety of Wolves’ miscues, gained a 10-4 lead in the opener.

C-N, behind a five-point service run by senior Haley Ernest, tied the score at 10 on a Broncos’ hitting error.

“We had a lot of unforced errors in the beginning,” said Wolves’ coach Steve Kedsch. “Not playing for a while and getting pushed by a good team forces some of those errors. I’m glad we were able to clean those up. They play good competition, and it shows. They hustled and covered the floor well.”

The Broncos regained the lead at 11-10 on a kill by senior Aspen Fredrick.

C-N quickly got a sideout and surged to a 15-11 lead, forcing BR-H to use a time-out.

BR-H then got a sideout on a hitting miscue, but Wolves then regained the serve on a kill by senior Heidi Kirschner for a 16-12 lead.

The Wolves continued to extend their lead before clinching the opener on a service ace by senior Liana Blahnik.

A five-point service run by senior Malorie Baumler and back-to-back kills by Taylor Kedsch helped the Wolves gain a 12-2 advantage in the second set.

The Wolves still held a seemingly comfortable 21-11 lead following a hitting error by the Broncos.

BR-H climbed within 23-20 on a two-hit violation and 24-21 on a kill by junior Alaska Peterson before a kill by Taylor Kedsch ended that set.

“I thought we had some momentum going into Game 3,” said BR-H coach Jennifer Ives. “Then, they got ahead, which made it difficult for us to come back.”

In the third set, Blahnik served for seven consecutive points, helping the Wolves gain a 12-2 lead.

BR-H trimmed its deficit to 15-8 on a C-N hitting miscue. The Wolves, however, didn’t allow the Broncos to get any closer.

“We started slow again,” said Ives. “It’s hard to come back from 8-10 points down. We didn’t come out with the intensity we needed and struggled a little on serve receives. Our girls battled back, but they definitely had the height advantage, and I felt we had the defensive advantage. To Carney-Nadeau’s credit, they’re a great team.”

Blahnik finished with four aces, 15 kills and 16 digs. Senior setter Haley Ernest collected 25 assists, and junior Mackenzie Walcher had 16 digs.

“We were up and down a little tonight, but we kept fighting through our struggles,” said coach Kedsch.

Peterson tallied seven kills. Varoni collected 12 assists, junior Tressa Ives had nine digs, and senior Selena Britton added eight digs.

BR-H, which won the jayvee match (25-15, 25-10), hosts Forest Park in its regular-season finale tonight.
