Big Bay girls toppled in fifth

GARDEN CORNERS –After five of its six starters played an entire soccer match under a downpour, Big Bay de Noc forced a fifth set but fell to the Mackinac Island Lakers 3-2 (18-25, 30-28, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12) Saturday.

“The girls played hard,” Black Bears coach Angie Paulson said. “Especially for half of them coming straight from an 80-minute soccer match. They had great energy today and that’s what seems to set us apart from match to match.”

Despite the majority of starters coming off an entirely different sport shortly before, Big Bay secured the first set for itself without too much trouble.

The Lakers regrouped in the second, and the two dueled into extra points where Mackinac Island was victorious (30-28).

Mackinac Island took the third set with less trouble,.

Alix Bleau led the Black Bears with six aces, four kills and 15 digs, and Piper Jones collected three aces, eight kills, two blocks, 12 digs and six assists. Katelyn Dekeyser finished with five aces, three kills, six digs and two assists, and Abbey Matheny notched four aces and six digs.

Big Bay hosts Ojibwe Charter Tuesday.
