Area players earn GNC first team honors

ESCANABA — For yet another season, the Marquette Redmen dominated the Great Northern Conference boys basketball awards voted on by the coaches at their annual meeting at Mo’s Pub in Escanaba Friday afternoon.
Marquette’s Kameron Karp was named Player of the Year, Redmen coach Brad Nelson was named Coach of the Year, and Marquette’s Drew Wyble was named Defensive Player of the Year.
The U.P.’s second-ranked Redmen finished the regular season 17-3 and 7-1 in the GNC to capture their fourth straight conference title.
Despite Marquette’s dominance, Escanaba’s Peyton Fedell and Gladstone teammates Rane Castor and Cam Ballard were named to the All-Conference first team. Fedell averaged 17.1 points per game throughout conference play, while Ballard averaged 17.5 and Castor averaged 16.1. Joining them on the first team were Menominee’s Keagan Monroe and Marquette’s Ty Lotterman.
Earning second team honors were Escanaba’s Carter Hudson and Brandon Frazer. Hudson averaged 13.6 points in league play and Frazer averaged 11.6. Joining them on the second team were Wyble, Kingsford’s Cole Bracket and Menominee’s Aidan Bellisle.

Special mention went to Gladstone’s Noah Ballard, Kingsford’s Andrew Paupore, and Marquette teammates John Thomson and Lincoln Sager.
Receiving honorable mention were Escanaba’s Bryant Maki and Connor Smale, Gladstone’s Jarret St. John and Caden Alworden, and Menominee’s Brock Barrette.
Escanaba was the JV conference winner with a 6-2 record and Kingsford’s freshmen team won the conference with an undefeated 8-0 record.
