Mid Pen boys and girls win at Big Bay

GARDEN CORNERS — The Mid Peninsula girls basketball team came out quick and kept on rolling to secure a 69-37 road victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears Tuesday night.

The Black Bears (13-3) kept themselves in the game in the first quarter and didn’t make it easy for the Wolverines, who led 18-12 after the first.

“Big Bay was scrappy tonight,” Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell said. “They were a lot better team than the first time we saw them (in a 56-9 win Dec. 20). Bob Pederson did a heck of a job with that team. He did a heck of a thing with them. They hung right in there in the first half. They’re a good team but they’re young. They’ll be much better in a couple years.”

However, they weren’t able to lock down Kennedy Englund, who scored 26 points in the first half.

“Kennedy had 26 points and 10 boards in the first half,” Croasdell said. “She played smooth, a real smooth game. Kennedy kept drilling everything she shot.”

The Wolverines (14-4) held on to their 38-19 advantage after halftime to seal the game.

“Everything came together for us tonight,” Croasdell said. “The girls played with a lot of confidence. It was clean, and everything clicked just right.”

Englund led the Wolverines with 32 points, 16 rebounds, and five assists. Chevy Koski chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, while Daisy Englund added 11 points.

“Chevy’s offensive game picked back up after (Monday’s game at Rapid River),” Croasdell said. “She went 7 for 8 from the line. Daisy played another good floor game for us. She’s shooting well and moving the ball. A lot of people played a lot of minutes tonight.”

Meagan Yonker led the Black Bears with 14 points.

Mid Pen travels to Stephenson Tuesday, while Big Bay hosts Paradise today.

The Mid Pen boys also won 58-32.

Zach Englund led the Wolverines (7-8) with 18 points and Joe McNally had 16. Brayden Willour scored 15 and Travis Johnson added 10 for the Black Bears (1-14).

The Wolverines, who visit Rapid River Friday, led 10-5 after the first quarter and 29-20 at halftime.
