Jets re-enter U.P. poll at No. 5

ESCANABA — As the regular season begins to wind down, things are starting to become a little more clear in terms of who the best basketball teams in the U.P. really are. The latest U.P. poll released Monday was another indicator of that, as another week went by without any significant changes at the top.

Locally, Escanaba remained No. 4 in Division 1-3 boys. The three teams above the Eskymos — Iron Mountain, Negaunee and Marquette — all remained in their top three spots, respectively. The only change was Munising replaced Westwood at No. 5.

In Division 4, North Central reappeared at No. 5 after a pair of big road wins over previously fourth-ranked Rapid River and Stephenson. Dollar Bay remained the unanimous No. 1, followed by Pickford, Rudyard and Chassell. The Rockets fell out after receiving just one vote.

The Escanaba girls fell out of the top five in Division 1-3, but the top three remained the same. Menominee is still the unanimous No. 1, followed by Westwood and Sault Ste. Marie. Calumet made its first poll appearance at No. 4 after knocking off Negaunee in overtime last week. The Miners dropped from fourth to fifth.

No movement occurred in Division 4, as St. Ignace is still the unanimous No. 1, followed by Ewen-Trout Creek, Baraga, Pickford and North Dickinson.
