Black Bears capture NLL title

MACKINAC ISLAND — In their first year in the conference, the Big Bay de Noc girls are Northern Lights League champions.

The Black Bears (13-2, 12-0 NLL) wrapped up a weekend sweep over Mackinac Island with a 40-17 road win Saturday, finishing their basketball season undefeated in conference play.

Big Bay led 19-11 at halftime, then shut out Mackinac Island in the third quarter as it gained an insurmountable 25-11 advantage going to the fourth.

Alix Bleau led the Black Bears with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Gracynn Durrance added eight points and 10 boards.

The Black Bears also won a much closer 38-30 decision Friday.

Big Bay trailed 14-13 at the half before pulling ahead 24-21 at the end of the third quarter and then scored 14 points in the fourth to seal the victory.

Meagan Yonker led the Black Bears with 17 points and five steals. Bleau added eight points, nine rebounds and five steals, while Camryn Pederson also chipped in five steals.

The Black Bears host Mid Peninsula Tuesday.
