ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — Nine-year-old Ben Olson became the third Northern Lights YMCA swimmer to qualify for the state tournament while placing second in the boys’ 9-10 100-yard backstroke in the annual Green Bay YMCA Titletown Freeze here last weekend.

“Ben has been hanging close to a state time for the last couple meets,” said NLY coach Scott Dykema. “It was exciting to see him push and achieve that time in the 100 back.”

Adrianna Getzloff set a team record in the 13-14 girls’ division, winning the 100 backstroke in 1:03.1 in addition to taking second in the 200 backstroke (2:21.18)

Irene Neumeier qualified with victories in 200 freestyle (2:13.46) and 500 freestyle (6:04.05) and Ava Getzloff qualified in 200 back (2:24.98).

Nata Lanaville was runner-up in boys’ 13-14 500 free (5:29.39) and third in 200 free (2:02.53) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.65). Colten Getzloff placed third in 500 free (6:08.82).

Esther Oswald completed the three-day event by taking second in 15-16 girls’ 100 backstroke (2:14.47).

Fourteen-year-old Manny Oswald, nine-year-old Molly Matthews and Jake Lanaville, seven-year-old Alexandra Meinander and six-year-old Lyla Giffin also showed great improvement, according to Dykema.

“The kids are working really hard and seeing that work pay off as they see times drops in their times,” he added. “Many of our younger swimmers are getting stronger and stronger every day.”

The Northern Lights YMCA hosts an annual Yooper Invitational Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
