Wolverines slip past North Central

POWERS — Senior guard Kennedy Englund provided the Mid Peninsula girls with clutch shooting here Tuesday night, helping them escape with a 43-42 basketball victory over the North Central Jets.

The Bay College recruit drained a pair of 3-point field goals in the fourth quarter of this Skyline Central Conference match-up, including a 20-foot set shot from the left wing in the final 20 seconds, which sent the Wolverines ahead to stay 43-41.

Englund, who finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds, also sank a jump shot from top of the key with less than three minutes left to play as the Wolverines gained a 38-35 lead.

“Kennedy has been struggling from the floor all year, but she’ll come around,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell.

“Tonight, she hit some clutch shots and really helped us on the boards.”

Junior guard Andie Arsenault answered with back-to-back treys, giving the Jets a 41-38 lead on a 22-foot jumper at 1:45.

“We felt we had some momentum after Andie hit those big 3s,” said Jets’ coach Lee Vincent. “We played good at times and bad at times. We took a lot of bad shots, but we’ll learn from it. We’re pretty even with them. I thought Jaiden (Fleetwood) did heck of a job on Kennedy. We started in a zone, but that wasn’t enough because they have too many good shooters. We had to go to a man-to-man.

“We haven’t played a lot of man-to-man yet. We’re still practicing with that. I’m putting new stuff in every day. We just have to practice more.”

Junior guard Daisy Englund drove the lane for a layup with a minute left, bringing the Wolverines within 41-40 and setting the stage for Kennedy’s game-winner.

Mid Pen led 18-10 midway through the second stanza. North Central answered with a 10-1 run, taking a 20-19 halftime lead on a gifter by senior forward Alex Neville.

The Jets extended their lead to 27-21 on a lay-in and free throw by Arsenault midway through the third. The Wolverines then scored eight unanswered points, taking a 29-27 lead on a layup by senior forward Chevy Koski with 2:17 left in that frame.

A lay-in by Pavlat tied the score at 1:16. The Wolverines regained the lead on a pair of charity tosses by Kennedy Englund and took a 34-29 lead on Camryn Croasdell’s 21-foot jumper from the left wing with 23 seconds left in the third.

Croasdell finished with 10 points and Daisy Englund had eight. Bree Arsenault paced the Jets with 18 points and Neville collected 11 points and 14 boards.

The Wolverines held a 39-32 rebounding advantage and hit 16-of-60 field goals.

“We started a little shaky, partly because they played great defense,” said coach Croasdell. “We were forcing things and told the girls to relax. We were looking for mismatches, but there weren’t too many of those. The teams are very equal. These were defensive-minded teams both ways. Both teams are quick and switch real well. I thought Daisy and Camryn played great defense on the Arsenault girls. We’re happy with everything in the game except for our free throw shooting (5-of-14). We’re still not shooting that good.”

The Jets were 17-of-35 from the floor. Both teams committed 12 turnovers.

“It was nip and tuck all night,” said Vincent. “This game could have gone either way. I thought Alex played an excellent game. We have a lot of teams in our conference that are pretty even and every team is going to get better.”

Mid Pen (2-1), which also won the jayvee contest 29-26, hosts Republic-Michigamme Friday. The Jets (2-1) host Stephenson Tuesday.
