Braves’ swimmers place 2nd

MANISTIQUE — A strong start helped the Gladstone girls place second in a season-opening triangular swim meet here Tuesday night.

The Braves, who won three of the first four events, scored 95 points. Kingsford won with 136 and Manistique had 38.

Kingsford’s boys also won with 132, followed by Manistique 65 and Gladstone 39.

“We have a small team this year, but the kids did very well at the meet,” said Braves’ coach Tom Desy. “I was very happy with how the team performed tonight, especially the new swimmers.”

Gladstone’s Izzy Houseman won the 200-yard freestyle race and helped the winning 200 freestyle relay. Lydia Tembruell took the 200 individual medley and Megan Fritz copped 50 freestyle. Tembruell, Fritz and Alexis Marenger were also part of the winning relay.

Braves’ senior Alex Williams took second in 500 freestyle and third in 200 IM and Camden Griggs was runner-up in 100 freestyle.

“The boys’ team did as good as could be expected with just four swimmers,” said Desy.

The Braves are back in action Dec. 18 when they visit Marquette.
