Whitmer wins race

ESCANABA — Gary Whitmer of Gladstone earned top honors in the Sixth Annual Escanaba Diehard Run here Sunday, covering the four-mile course in 26 minutes, 23 seconds.

He was followed by Kevin Holmes of Escanaba (30:58) and women’s champion Angela Artley of Gladstone (32:47).

The race, which drew 10 runners, took place under sunny and breezy conditions with temperatures in the upper 30s.

Huskies shut out

HOUGHTON — The second-ranked Ferris State Bulldogs blanked Michigan Tech 52-0 here Saturday in a GLIAC football contest.

Despite an almost equal time of possession, the Bulldogs finished with 615 total yards of offense compared to the Huskies’ 120.

Ferris State (9-0) scored 14 points in the first quarter and 10 in the second to lead 24-0 at halftime. The Huskies (4-5) were unable to get beyond the Ferris State 25-yard line in the first half.

The Bulldogs added four more touchdowns in the second half.

Tech’s Steele Fortress completed nine passes for 65 yards, and Jared Smith collected 37 yards on 13 carries. Emmett Boehler finished with 22 yards on eight carries, and Ben Hartley notched 41 yards on two catches.

Defensively, Braxton Blackwell collected 14 tackles and Ben Rybicki finished with 13. Glacier Wallington notched eight tackles and a forced fumble, while Tal Allen contributed five tackles.

Tech travels to Wayne State University Saturday.

NMU falls to foe

MIDLAND — Northern Michigan University’s football struggles continued here Saturday as the Wildcats were topped by Northwoods University 28-10.

After an early score from NMU’s Tyshon King on a one-yard rush, Northwoods (1-8) tied it at 7 before the first quarter ended. The Wildcats’ Daniel Riser hit a career-long 46-yard field goal to give them a 10-7 lead in the second.

However, the NMU offense stalled, and Northwoods scored three more touchdowns.

King led the Wildcats with 95 yards on 19 carries and one TD, while Keshawn Howard collected 46 on six carries. Benjamin Loutsis notched 29 yards on three catches.

Defensively, Isaac Darkangelo finished with a career-high 17 tackles, and Antonio Howard Jr. had 11 tackles. Brady Hanson collected eight tackles, and Anthony Ladd had six.

NMU (1-7) hosts Saginaw Valley State Saturday.

NMU icers sweep

MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan hockey team outpaced Alabama Hunstville 4-2 here Saturday to move into first place in the WCHA standings.

The teams traded goals early, with Alabama (0-8-0, 0-4-0-0 WCHA) tying it up after goals from the Wildcats’ Vincent de Mey and Caleb Schroer.

NMU (6-1-1, 4-0-0-0 WCHA) pulled away at the end of the second period with a goal from Andre Ghantous. Griffin Loughran added one more in the third period.

NMU rallied to defeat Alabama 5-3 Friday.

Alabama pulled ahead 16 seconds into the first period. NMU’s Rylan Yaremko tied it up eight minutes later, but Alabama regained the lead just 30 seconds after.

Loughran tied it at 2 less than a minute into the second period. Ghantous and Darien Craighead added two more goals as the second period wound down to give NMU a 4-2 lead.

Both teams added one goal apiece in the third.

NMU hosts St. Cloud State this weekend.

Tech icers fall

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Michigan Tech hockey team fell to North Dakota 3-1 here Saturday during the annual U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game.

Justin Misiak got the Huskies (3-4) off to a good start a little less than six minutes into the game, scoring his first goal of the season.

However, North Dakota (5-1-1) tied it at 1 four minutes later and went on to add two more goals to seal the game.

Tech hosts Minnesota State this weekend.
