Tech beats NMU for 10th time in a row

HOUGHTON — Will Ark threw a go-ahead 10-yard touchdown pass to Ben Hartley with 7:24 remaining, and the Michigan Tech football team rallied to beat rival Northern Michigan 24-20 for the 10th straight time here Saturday in their annual Miners’ Cup game.

Ark got the Huskies on the board first in the GLIAC contest, firing a 30-yard TD to Jacob Wenzlick just under five minutes into the game. The Huskies made it 10-0 on a 29-yard field goal by Evan Gornick early in the second quarter.

Daniel Riser brought NMU within 10-6 on field goals from 40 and 26 yards out. The Wildcats then took a 13-10 lead with 2:46 left until halftime on a 27-yard pass from Ryan Johnson to Ravon Johnson.

Tech (3-2) responded on its first possession after the half, driving 82 yards and finishing it off with 35-yard TD pass from Ark to Wenzlick to go up 17-13.

NMU (1-5) went back on top on a 75-yard screen pass from Ryan Johnson to speedy tailback Tyshon King to make it 20-17 with 2:13 left in the third quarter before the Huskies rallied in the fourth.

Ark completed 21 passes for 347 yards and three TDs. Wenzlick caught nine passes for 213 yards and two scores, and Hartley had five receptions for 57 yards and a TD. Jared Smith rushed for 76 yards, and Travis Tidwell anchored the defense with 10 tackles.

King led NMU with 114 yards rushing on 25 carries and added a 75-yard TD reception to finish with 189 scrimmage yards. Ryan Johnson threw for 158 yards and two TDs while Ravon Johnson caught two passes for 32 yards and Ryan Knight had two receptions for 31 yards. Antonio Howard Jr. led the defense with 13 tackles.

The Huskies visit Davenport University Saturday while NMU hosts Grand Valley State.
