Late goals lift Islanders over Hannahville

BEAVER ISLAND — The Beaver Island Islanders scored twice in the final five minutes here Thursday, handing the Hannahville Soaring Eagles a 5-3 soccer loss.

Dominic Metzger, Joe Larson and Xander Spry scored for the Soaring Eagles, who tied the score with seven minutes remaining in the Northern Lights League match.

“I thought we had a little momentum when we tied the score,” said Hannahville coach Dan Kleikamp. “It was a real good match. Joe scored on a direct kick from midfield and it was a beautiful kick. Only, we didn’t play as sharp as we did Tuesday (in a 7-4 triumph over Big Bay de Noc).

“They were flying around and outhustling us to the ball. They came ready to play. This was probably the sloppiest we played all season. Although, I’ll give the kids credit for being in the match till the end.”

In volleyball, Hannahville fell to the Islanders in three sets.

The Soaring Eagles travel to Munising for the NLL soccer tournament, where they’ll open against Mackinac Island Saturday at 10 a.m. The league volleyball tourney takes place Oct. 19 at Brimley.
