Patriots blank Esky, 8-0

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Jasmine Clark returns the ball against Westwood’s Madi Koski during a No. 1 singles match Monday at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls’ tennis team faced an unscheduled, tough opponent here Monday as the Westwood Patriots overpowered the Eskymos 8-0.

The Eskymos fell in each flight in two sets, with No. 1 doubles going to seven games in both sets. However, Esky’s Maddy Ide and Alison Sommers couldn’t overcome Westwood’s Karlie Patron and Katelyn Anttila, falling 7-6(3) and 7-5.

“No. 1 doubles put up a tough fight today,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “They could have easily won the match if a few balls had bounced differently.”

Esky also showed some fight at No. 3 doubles, with Maddy Mishica and Laura Sliva forcing a seventh game against Westwood’s Avery Mariuzza and Emily Nelson in the first set before falling 7-5 and then dropping the second set 6-4.

“No. 3 doubles also played a good match against a good opponent,” Ogren said.

In No. 2 doubles, Esky’s Anna Branstrom and Laura Sliva fell 6-1, 6-2 against the Patriots’ Meghan Johnson and Ellie Miller. Westwood’s Claire Gilles and Natalie Prophet finished with a win at No. 4 doubles against Esky’s Rylee Kuehl and Ashley Sylvester, 6-1, 6-3.

The Patriots (7-2) showed their prowess in singles matches, finishing four of the eight sets 6-0 and all at 6-2 or less.

“Singles, I feel great about them,” Patriots’ coach Sarah Massie said. “They’ve all been working on a lot of stuff in practice, and to see them implement that into their matches is exciting to see. They all played well today.”

At No. 1, Esky’s Jasmine Clark fell to Westwood’s Madi Koski, 6-2, 6-0, and Westwood’s Tessa Leece finished Esky’s Jacey Moreau 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2.

Ukiah Penegor fell against Westwood’s Jillian Koski at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, and Esky’s Amber Yang was unable to overcome the Patriots’ Jenna Wealton at No. 4, 6-0, 6-1.

“Tough meet today against one of the better teams in the U.P.,” Ogren said. “This meet wasn’t originally on our schedule, so when Sarah approached me about a possible meet, I jumped at the opportunity.

“To become a better team, we need to play better teams and challenge ourselves. It’s good for our girls to see what the top teams are doing, so we have something to strive toward.”

Westwood also topped Gladstone 7-1 later in the day.

Esky visits Marquette today while Westwood hosts Kingsford.
