Marquette XC teams win Border Battle

MARINETTE — To nobody’s surprise, the Marquette cross country teams dominated the Border Battle Invitational here Saturday.

The Marquette boys, placing five in the top eight, scored 24 points. The Redmen were followed by Menominee 82 and Coleman, Wis. 110.

Marquette’s girls placed four in the top 10 and tallied 38 points.

They were followed by Menominee 71 and Wrightstown, Wis. 88.

Escanaba and North Central didn’t field complete teams in either race.

Marquette senior Moses Waite won the boys’ 3.1-mile race in 18 minutes, 21 seconds, followed by Marinette senior Matt Maye (18:32) and Norway sophomore Adam Cavagnetto (18:36.6).

Esky junior Derek Douglas took 11th (19:43), followed by freshmen Dan Smith 32nd (21:45.5) and Isaak Carlson 56th (24:29).

North Central’s leader was junior Wyatt Riley in 49th (23:47.3), followed by freshman Jesse Sampson (24:05.2) and sophomores Dominic Naser 63rd (27:01.6) and Dakota Schwark 65th (27:08.7).

Marinette senior Katelyn Kitzinger topped the girls race at 21:29.6, followed by Marquette sophomore Olivia Moffat (22:15.4) and Menominee sophomore Hayden Buck (22:16.3).

Esky sophomore Ava Gardner took 33rd (26:32) and junior Holly Chenier was 36th (27:18).

North Central senior Bree Arsenault was 50th (34:35.8) and freshman Ashtyn Smith took 51st (35:28.7).

Esky and North Central resume in Tuesday’s Munising Invitational.
