Jets put up 62 points in win over Rockets

Austin Hemmingson | Daily Press North Central’s Noah Gorzinski (7) stiff arms Rapid River’s Gavin Berg (20) during the first quarter of an 8-player football game Friday at Rapid River.

RAPID RIVER — There was no stopping the North Central Jets here Friday night as they romped to a 62-6 football triumph over the Rapid River Rockets.

North Central scored on every possession except its final one that ended on a high snap from center in this Great Lakes Eight Conference crossover match-up.

The Jets finished with 403 yards in total offense, including 314 in the first half while building a 54-6 advantage.

“I don’t like games like this,” said Jets’ coach Leo Gorzinski. “I really like these guys (Rockets). They lost all-conference players across the board (through graduation). Their staff does a great job. They’ll be there in the end.”

Cole Timblin scored from a yard out on an option play, giving the Jets an 8-0 lead just two minutes, five seconds into the contest.

The Rockets also scored on their first possession, climbing within 8-6 on junior quarterback Bryce Lundquist’s 18-yard pass to junior end Mason Kudlick.

North Central’s Noah Gorzinski then grabbed the ensuing kickoff and dashed 83 yards for a 14-6 cushion.

“We’re built around our speed,” said coach Gorzinski. “We want to keep people moving. That’s the way we intend to play.”

The Jets scored three more times in the first quarter for a 38-6 advantage and added two TDs in the second.

“They’re a good football team,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “I was impressed with their speed. Their two quarterbacks (Noah and Luke Gorzinski) make good decisions and Timblin is a nice running back. They want to spread you out. If Noah and Luke make you miss, they’re gone. Noah’s kickoff return right after we scored really hurt us.”

Noah and Luke Gorzinski combined for 197 yards passing and six TDs, including scores of 32, 23 and 45 yards to Leo Gorzinzki, Jr. Noah also threw a 42-yard TD aerial to Luke 31 seconds before halftime and scored on a five-yard keeper 11 seconds earlier.

The Jets (2-0) rushed for 206 yards, led by Luke Gorzinski’s 132 on seven carries. Timblin added 72 in six attempts.

Rapid River (0-2) was limited to 152 yards, including 87 on the ground. Lundquist passed for 65.

“We did some good things,” said Ostrenga. “I think we did better on kickoff returns. Our guys came together. We were in the right positions. Obviously, we would have liked to have stayed closer, but the guys were doing their jobs.”

Rockets’ junior running back Griffin Flath left the contest wtih a stinger late in the opening frame.

The Rockets travel to Rudyard Friday while the Jets host Pickford Sept. 14.

“That’s the big one,” said coach Gorzinski. “That will be speed against strength. What a way for us to gauge where we’re at, playing against one of the best (eight-player) teams in the state.”
