Huskies win 10th straight season opener

HILLSDALE — The Michigan Tech University football team used a 20-point second quarter to run away with a 29-14 victory over Hillsdale here Saturday for its 10th straight season-opening win.

The Huskies began their second quarter avalanche on a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Will Ark at the 14:17 mark to give them a 10-7 lead. Ark connected with Ben Hartley on a 17-yard pass with 22 seconds to go in the first half, extending the lead to 17-7. The Huskies then took advantage of a Hillsdale fumble on the ensuing kickoff, setting them up at the 26-yard line. Two plays later, Ark found Hartley again on a 26-yard pass to make it 23-7 going into halftime.

After Hillsdale trimmed its deficit to 23-14, Jared Smith punched one in from three yards out to give Tech a 29-14 cushion and seal the win.

Smith finished with 172 yards rushing on 29 carries and 21 yards receiving on two receptions. Ark completed 21 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 22 yards and a score on nine carries. Hartley reeled in six receptions for 81 yards and two TDs.

Tech’s defense limited the Chargers to just 160 yards of offense, including -9 on the ground while forcing four turnovers. Travis Tidwell and John Paramski each had a team-high five tackles. Tidwell also recorded an interception and a forced a fumble while Paramski had a forced fumble, sack and a fumble recovery.

The Huskies visit McKendree Univeristy Saturday.
