Eskymos fall on road against Redettes
MARQUETTE — The first time this year’s Marquette Senior High School varsity girls tennis team faced Escanaba, the Redettes won a 7-1 road decision to open the season in August.
History repeated itself on Tuesday afternoon, with MSHS again earning a 7-1 win, this time at home.
The Redettes swept the doubles flights while also earning wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 4 singles.
“It was a nice match with some really close action in doubles,” Marquette head coach Derek Sandstrom said. “All of the teams improved today. I was impressed by Haddie (Ketzenberger) at No. 4 singles. The last time she played Esky, it went three sets. She’s really improving.”
Ketzenberger faced the same opponent she did in the first meeting with the Eskymos, Amber Yang, who she defeated in August 6-4, 6-3, 7-5.
Ketzenberger made it a two-setter on Tuesday, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Elysa Olivier claimed the top singles flight for the Redettes by defeating Jasmine Clark 6-0, 6-0, while Mollie Kilpela topped Jacey Moreau 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Eskymos’ lone win came at No. 3 singles, with Ukiah Penegor defeating Hannah Young 7-6 (7-1), 6-2.
The team of Ryleigh Jackson and Kennedy Tate took the top doubles flight with a 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 victory over Esky’s Maddy Ide and Alison Sommers. Breanne Sandstrom and Sydney McCarthy topped Anna Branstrom and Laura Sliva in a three setter 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-4.
At No. 3, Ruth Hummell and Zoey Brian also went three sets with Madison Mishica and Gracie Wickham, defeating them 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.
