Broncos fall against Wykons Friday

STAMBAUGH — Holding a halftime lead wasn’t enough for the Bark River-Harris Broncos here Friday night as they dropped a 29-14 football decision to West Iron County Wykons.

The Broncos led 8-0 following an eight-yard run by Trevor Demers in the second quarter of this WestPAC crossover match-up at Nelson Field.

West Iron, however, scored the next 23 point after the intermission.

“Going into halftime, we knew we had some things to clean up,” said BR-H coach Al Stenberg. “We weren’t in control of the game by any means. They threw the ball more affectively and we had some breakdowns in our backfield in the second half.”

The Broncos drew within 23-14 on Nick Javurek’s 15-yard pass to Tyler Racicot in the fourth stanza, but were unable to get any closer.

“We started that drive on our five-yard line,” said Stenberg. “That gave us a boost. We felt we still had a chance. It definitely looked like they were quicker in the backfield.

“They also had a weight advantage, which tends to wear you down.”

BR-H rushed for 179 yards. Trevor Lippens led the way with 78 on 17 carries and Demers finished with 38 in seven attempts. Javurek completed 6-of-15 passes for 86.

The Broncos (1-1) host Munising Saturday while the Wykons (2-0) host Manistique Friday.
