BR-H sweeps Westwood

ISHPEMING — The Bark River-Harris Broncos won their fourth straight game to start the season here Monday, sweeping Westwood 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-10) in a non-conference volleyball contest.

The Broncos started a tad bit slow, but recovered nicely to dominate the third set and complete the sweep.

“We knew this was going to be a big game for us in a string of three straight games on the road this week,” BR-H coach Jen Ives said. “The girls wanted to come out strong. We practiced over the weekend and we wanted to start strong. We came out serving strong, especially in game three. We went back to basics, especially on our serve receives, and it worked out for us.”

Ives said the biggest difference in the third set was the Broncos cleaned up their offense.

“We missed a lot of serves in game one and two, so we needed to refocus in game three. We focused on our serves and we cleaned that up,” she said. “We knew Westwood had a couple big hitters and we had a game plan for them. We really went back to running our offense in game three and focused on our serve receive so we could set up our offense and make them play more of a defense so they couldn’t get their offense going.”

Makena Lockwood led the Broncos with 17 digs, 10 kills and two blocks. Kassidy Roll chipped in with six kills and a block while Alaska Peterson had 18 assists and Abbie Flagstadt had 11 digs. Cara Zawacki served five aces and Tressa Ives had four aces and a block.

“(Makena) is just one of our all-around players and she just gets a lot of touches around the ball. She’s a three-year player and a senior, so she has good court presence. Her and Alaska Peterson have good chemistry — she’s our setter. When you have good chemistry you’ll see big numbers like that.”

BR-H, which also won the jayvee contest 2-0, visits Carney-Nadeau tonight at 8 p.m. EDT.
