Black Bears drop matches to Beaver Island

GARDEN CORNERS — It was a tough weekend for the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears as they dropped a pair of volleyball and soccer matches to the Beaver Island Islanders.

The volleyball team fell to the Islanders 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-9) Friday and 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-14) Saturday.

“Friday night we had a great first set despite the loss,” said Big Bay coach Angie Paulson. “We tried a different lineup and they were moving, covering, calling for the ball and finding the holes for the most part. After that, the girls were making mistakes that could have been avoided. Unfortunately for us, this didn’t improve in the second or third set Friday night and the same errors were being made Saturday morning.”

The soccer team also bowed to the Islanders 6-0 Friday and 7-2 Saturday.

“Friday night, the kids had a hard time finding their groove,” said Paulson, who filled in for Alex Ranguette. “They held their own in the first half, then couldn’t keep up in the second half. Beaver Island has some real talented and quick kids.”

Big Bay’s Braydon Willour hit an unassisted goal and Meagan Yonker scored on a pass from Travis Johnson Saturday.

“Saturday morning was so much better,” said Paulson. “I never coached a day of soccer in my life and was so thankful Alex LaLonde was able to step up as a Big Bay de Noc alumni and take on the lead with coaching. He made some changes to the lineup on behalf of coach Ranguette and it worked to our advantage. We changed the goalie to get more speed on the field. Unfortunately, our defense was running out of gas and Beaver Island was able to increase the gap.”

Big Bay visits Munising Baptist Thursday.
