LPGA won’t return

to Thornberry Creek

HOBART, Wis. — The LPGA won’t return to Thornberry Creek at Oneida Golf Course for a fourth year after the Oneida Nation’s Business Committee voted to end its sponsorship of the Thornberry Creek Classic in late July, according to a report by the Green Bay Press Gazette Thursday.

The main reason for this is the event failed to break even financially. The Oneida tribe was unable to recoup the cost of hosting the tournament through sponsorships, merchandise sales, and food and beverage sales on the course.

Another factor was more spectators came from northeastern Wisconsin communities than expected, reducing spending at hotels. Tourism and tribal data indicates the annual economic impact was about $7.2 million, below the initial projection of $8 million to $15 million.

Reports shared by the business committee with Oneida members stated the event was a success in terms of attendance and media exposure, despite the tribe losing money on the event. There were 62,000 attendees the first year and 64,000 attendees the second year, which exceeded the tribe’s estimate of 40,000. An April report indicated the inaugural event earned the tribe $13.7 million worth of media impressions.

Oneida Nation Tribal Chairman Tehassi Hill said the event was a great showcase for the Oneida Nation and the improvements made to the course will “have far-reaching positive impacts” for the golf course, noting the LPGA could return to Thornberry Creek someday under a different sponsor.
