Esky tops Tri-County, advances to district tournament

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Minor Boys’ Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) left nothing to chance here Friday night as they posted a 10-0 baseball victory in four innings over Tri-County.

“That went real well,” said Esky manager Dan Garcia. “Tri-County is a good team. They hung with Norway for quite a while in the Yooper tournament (in a 12-8 loss) and that was in the back of our minds. We didn’t take them lightly. The kids came out to play and we’re proud of them for that.”

Esky is idle until Thursday when it hosts the undefeated team from the Norway area tournament in a District 10 opener.

Tri-County returns to Dickson Field to face Gladstone today at 1 in an area tourney finale. The winner advances to the district tournament Thursday.

Winning pitcher Zahn Anderson tossed a three-hitter, struck out seven and walked one.

“Zahn pitched real well,” said Garcia. “He was throwing off-speed and started throwing his change-up and it was affective. It was a great game. The kids have come a long way.”

Joey Garcia got Esky on the board with a two-run double along the left field line in the opening frame, then scored on a wild pitch for a three-run cushion.

Esky, fueled by Tim Robitaille’s two-run double to left, added four runs in the second, then scored three times in the third.

Tri-County had runners aboard in each inning, but was unable to capitalize.

“We got runners in scoring position, but couldn’t get them through,” said Tri-County manager Matt Rondeau. “We wasted some scoring chances and had some uncharacteristic errors. They’re a good club. Anderson wasn’t far out of the strike zone and they didn’t make mistakes.”

Jake Dahn, who pitched 2 2/3 innings, absorbed the loss. He fanned one, walked seven, hit two batters and allowed eight runs on three hits.

“They were very patient at the plate,” said Rondeau. “We wanted to stick with Jake, but the strikes weren’t there. Although, that’s part of baseball. They put seven runs on us quick and we were able to save some pitchers. We’ve got plenty of arms left.”

Esky finished with six hits. Robitaille ripped a pair of doubles and Brody Ison added two singles.

Tri-County committed three errors and Esky had two, both in the fourth frame.
