Gladstone HOF to induct new members

GLADSTONE — Five new members and two new teams will be inducted into the Gladstone High School Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 12 at the Gladstone Terrace Lake Bluff.

Among the athletes being inducted are Renee (Carlson) Scoville, Holly (Bruntjens) Holstrom and Joe Mileski.

Scoville, a 1995 graduate, received 10 varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track. She was a four-year varsity letter winner and team captain in basketball. She was also named first team all-conference and All-U.P. Class ABC in ’94.

In volleyball, she was a three-year varsity letter winner, named team captain and first team all-GNC in ’95, and was also part of the ’94-95 GNC championship team.

She was also a three-year varsity letter winner in track and was a member of the ’93 GNC championship team.

For her efforts, she was named the GHS best girl athlete and best all-around girl in ’95.

Holstrom, a 2004 graduate, was a four-year varsity softball letter winner and a team captain in ’03 and ’04. She helped the Braves reach the state semifinals in ’03 while also earning all-state honorable mention before they won a state title in ’04. Her high school pitching record was 49-17 through 400 innings with 401 strikeouts. Offensively, she had 67 hits.

She also played basketball and was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council.

Mileski, a 2008 graduate, earned 10 varsity letters in football, wrestling and track. In football, he was an all-conference and All-U.P. dream team defensive back, All-U.P. returner and conference special teams player of the year, team captain and Brian Butler Award winner.

He was a four-year varsity letter winner in wrestling, receiving all-state recognition by placing in every tournament. He set the school record for wins with a 178-12 record and also set the school record for pins with 100. He was also a three-time U.P. champion, four-time conference champion, Brute Adidas national champion and Folkstyle national champion.

In track, he was a four-year varsity letter winner, a member of four U.P. state champion track teams and a member of the 1600-relay team that broke the school record.

In ’08, he won the Cappy Keil Award for best male athlete.

The Class of 2019 coach is the late Matt Houle.

Houle coached at Gladstone for 31 years, coaching wrestling, football and track. He was an assistant coach for the wrestling team that won its first-ever U.P. title in ’87. He was also the first track coach to ever defeat Escanaba in a dual meet, first coach to win a GNC championship, led the Braves to a regional title in ’91 and to a MHSAA record six straight U.P. titles.

Houle was also the athletic director for 15 years. During his time, he won many awards such as U.P. A.D. of the year in ’05, Michigan Administrators Association Champion of Children Award in ’06 and regional A.D. of the year in ’10. He also helped raise over $350,000 to improve athletic and educational facilities. In addition, he was involved with adding five new sports, including baseball, bowling, swimming, competitive cheer and a dance team.

The Class of 2019 community contributor is Bob Hewitt.

Hewitt was a coach in the Gladstone Little League in the mid-80’s through the late-90’s. In ’98, he led the campaign to start high school softball and built the field. He worked with Bob Davison to organize the Braves Fan Club golf outing for several years, which helped generate over $10,000 in proceeds for GHS athletics. Hewitt has been a Gladstone fan for over 40 years and can still be seen on the sideline or in the stands.

The Class of 2019 teams are the 2009 state champion softball team and the 1960 golf team, which won four straight Class B-C-D U.P. championships.

The ’09 softball team finished 35-5, defeating Reese 1-0 in the state title game. The Braves were coached by the late Gerry Smith.

The ’60 golf team won four straight titles from ’57-60. Members of the team included Mike Kelly, Gerry Hess, Jack Radicker and Tom Butch.

The team was coached by Eldon “Cappy” Keil all four years. Keil was a multi-sport coach at Gladstone.
