Bucs pulled under Red Wave

GLADSTONE — The Bark River Bucs had more than enough scoring chances, but couldn’t convert often enough in a 7-4 American Legion baseball loss to the Menominee Red Wave in a zone tournament opener here Thursday night.

Bark River left the bases loaded in the second and seventh inning and stranded 16 runners in the contest.

“They pushed their runs across,” said Bucs’ manager Matt Richer. “We also had the traffic, but couldn’t get the guys home. We didn’t give up. We kept coming at them. We just couldn’t get the timely hits.”

The Bucs scored their first run on a throwing error in the second.

Sam Hall scored on a single by Matt Richer Jr. and Zach Englund’s sacrifice fly trimmed Bark River’s deficit to 6-3 in fourth.

John Robinette’s single provided the Bucs with their final run in the seventh.

Jesus Becerra and Jake Rivard led the Red Wave with two hits apiece.

Bark River finished with six.

Alex Hansen, the first of three Menominee pitchers, took the win. Zach Englund, who worked six innings, absorbed the loss. Englund struck out four, walked two and hit four batters.

The Bucs, who face Negaunee today at 2 and Gladstone tonight at 7:30, committed five errors.

“Zach pitched better than his statistics show,” said manager Richer. “He often pitched out of trouble, but the errors definitely hurt us. He pitched well enough to give us a chance. Only, it wasn’t meant to be.”
