Bruce wins Scenic Shore Run

GLADSTONE — Adam Bruce enjoyed a record-setting day in the Eighth Annual Scenic Shore Run here Saturday.

The recent Gladstone High School graduate covered the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 49 seconds, followed by Lucas Cavalieri of Iron Mountain (18:03) and Gary Whitmer of Gladstone (19:57) on this sunny and seasonably cool morning.

“I got a nice push from the competition up front,” said Bruce. “For the beginning of summer, I’m pleased with that. It got a little warm toward the end, but after the winter we had I can’t complain. I’ve run this course many times. I felt comfortable out there.”

A trio from Gladstone set the pace in the women’s race, led by Michelle Paul at 20:53. She was followed by Chelsea Wyman (22:14) and recent Bay College graduate Zoie Berg (22:29).

“This was my first race in about two years,” said Paul, who recently served nine months in Afghanistan in the U.S. Army. “I started with the frontrunners, but ran for fun. I felt strong and it felt good to be out there. It was a little windy, but we had the wind on our back coming in. You can’t beat being here with family and friends. You can’t buy that in Afghanistan.”

Included in the record field of 45 runners and walkers was eight-year-old Braylin Carter of Gladstone, who ran a 49:40.
