Esky to celebrate

state title tonight

ESCANABA — The Escanaba softball team is holding a “Night of Softball Legends and Future Eskymos” to celebrate its state title tonight at the Esky softball field at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

The Eskymos’ state championship sign and All-State GPA sign will go up. T-ballers, little leaguers, and heartbreakers are invited to come play catch with the Eskymos. Kids will have the opportunity to run the bases with Nicole Kamin while playing the game call of her game winning home run against North Branch in the state semifinals. Cookies will be provided for the youth.

After the celebration, the Eskymos will hold their team banquet at Mo’s Pub in Escanaba at 7:30.

Carney-Nadeau

softball tourney

CARNEY — Carney-Nadeau High School is holding its 29th annual Lloyd Benson Memorial Softball Slugfest July 26-28 at the Carney softball fields. The tournament is double-elimination and games will be played rain or shine.

$500 will be awarded for first place, $300 for second and $100 for third. There will also be awards for best outfielder, infielder, hitter and Mr. Slugfest for the player with the most home runs. The “Curtis Grondin” MVP Award will be presented at the conclusion of the tournament. A home run derby will also be offered at a cost of $10 per participant. Half of the money submitted by participants will be awarded to the winner.

Cost to enter is $150 per team, with all proceeds benefitting the Carney athletics program. Deadline to register is July 23. To sign up, or for more information, contact Paul Polfus (639-2866 or 748-0184) or email ppolfus@gmail.com.

GLADSTONE — Tom Zeni and Sydney Wells won the Gladstone golf couples scramble at the Gladstone Golf Course Saturday with a combined score of 64.

They were followed by Kelly & Lori Shea 65, Scott & Tammy DeBakker 66, Terry & Cindy Cartwright 67, Scott Kwarciany & Rachel Latta 68, Scott & Lori Neurohr 69, Jim & Kristie Markell 69, and John & Barb Zeni 70.

U.P. Ladies Dual

tourney underway

IRON MOUNTAIN — Four-time champions Becky Cecconi of Iron Mountain and Karen Plaisier of Ishpeming are on track for a fifth title in the UP Ladies Golf Association’s UP Dual at Pine Grove Country Club.

Cecconi and Plaisier shot a four-over par 76 (36-40) for a three-shot lead in the UPLGA’s top best ball-scramble tournament Monday. Six-time UP Dual champions Lori Shea of Gladstone and Polly Anderson posted a 79 (38-41) in Monday’s best ball round.

Nancy Osier of Wakefield and Cathy Shamion of Ontonagon share third place with the new team of Iron Mountain’s Lisa Harry and Sue Popp at 83.

Two teams are knotted at 84 — JoAnn Poncino-Pam Frankini and Joan Smith-Sandy Glibota at 84.

Tournament concludes today with the scramble portion.
