Esky to celebrate

state title June 25

ESCANABA — The Escanaba softball team is holding a “Night of Softball Legends and Future Eskymos” to celebrate its state title June 25 at the Esky softball field at 6 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

The Eskymos’ state championship sign and All-State GPA sign will go up. T-ballers, little leaguers, and heartbreakers are invited to come play catch with the Eskymos. Kids will have the opportunity to run the bases with Nicole Kamin while playing the game call of her game winning home run against North Branch in the state semifinals. Cookies will be provided for the youth.

The Eskymos will hold their team banquet at Mo’s Pub in Escanaba at 7:30.

Gymnastics camp

ESCANABA — The Escanaba gymnastics program is holding a gymnastics camp June 24-27 at the Escanaba High School gym. The camp is taught by Esky coaches Theresa Pascoe, Lisa Block and the Esky gymnastics team.

The camp is for girls entering grades 1-8 and boys entering grades 1-2. Girls entering grades 3-4 are in session from 9-11 a.m. and cost is $50, boys and girls grades 1-2 go from 11:45-1:15 p.m. and cost is $40, and girls grades 5-8 go from 1:15-3:30 p.m. and cost is $60.

Registration forms are available at all elementary schools in the Escanaba district, including Holy Name and Escanaba Upper Elementary. Make checks payable to EHS Gymnastics.

ESCANABA — Escanaba Cubs’ Legion baseball manager John Bintner was wrongly identified as John Bitner in Wednesday’s edition of the Daily Press.

ECC men

ESCANABA — Dom Benetti shot a 35 at the Escanaba Country Club Men’s 9-hole league Wednesday. Benetti was followed by Jude VanDamme, Alex Sullivan and Brian Robinette 36, Randy Eis and Brandon Gundry 37, Alex Dehaan 38, and Darren Schemmel and Dave Harris 39.

Eis led the 18-hole league with a 72, followed by Benetti and Robinette 73, Harris 76 and Schemmel 79.

Terrace Bluff men

GLADSTONE — Terry Hoffmeyer shot a 36 at the Terrace Bluff Wednesday Night Men’s League. Hoffmeyer was followed by Rick LaFleur and Jake Sinclair 37, Tim Strasser 38 and Jeff Carlson 39.

Doug Gillis to hold

camp in Rapid River

RAPID RIVER — Doug Gillis, a six-time member of Team USA, is returning to Rapid River to host a two-day softball pitching camp July 15-16. The camp consists of four pitchers per hour, and cost is $60 per pitcher for the hour.

Sessions run for an hour each between 1-6 p.m. on the 15th and between 1-4 p.m. on the 16th. Pitchers need to bring their own catcher and indoor ball; no outdoor balls are allowed on the gym floor.

Each student’s pitching technique will be videotaped for critique, with tips and drills being suggested for practice. All training will be held at Rapid River High School. Fastpitch players of all ages and skill levels interested in pitching are encouraged to attend.
