Truitt wins first Run to Remember

RAPID RIVER — Zach Truitt of Rapid River topped a field of 63 runners Monday, earning top honors in the first Run to Remember Our Fallen Veterans.

Truitt covered the 3.2-mile course in 20 minutes, 46 seconds, followed by Robert Kilmer of Round Lake, Ill. (21:53) and Gary Whitmer of Gladstone (21:59).

“I didn’t know who’d be here,” said Truitt. “After about a half-mile I realized nobody was going to keep up with me. The turn-around is always a little tough, but the little gravel trail was nice. This was a nice event. It was well organized.”

Mindy Davenport of Escanaba became the women’s champion at 22:09, followed by Chelsea Wyman (23:35) and Casey Young (24:06), both of Gladstone.

“I just wanted to beat my time from last year (22:30), and the course was a little longer this time,” said Davenport. “The weather was perfect for running. I felt comfortable all the way through.”

The runners were greeted by cloudy conditions with temperatures near 50.
