Rockets’ boys win home meet

Austin Hemmingson | Daily Press Rapid River’s Noah Sefcik runs in front of North Central’s Cole Timblin during the boys 3200-meter relay at Thursday’s Rapid River Invitational. Rapid River took first and North Central took second.

RAPID RIVER — Junior Masyn Alexa shined on a chilly, damp and dreary day here Thursday, helping the North Dickinson girls capture the Rapid River Invitational track title with 134 points.

Mid Peninsula edged the host Rockets 98-90 for runner-up honors.

Alexa was a four-event winner, taking the 100-meter dash in 13.25 seconds, 200 (28.18), 400 (1:04.5) and anchoring the Nordics’ 1600 relay.

“The rain wasn’t fun, but it went away quickly,” she said. “Once the track dried up it wasn’t too bad. It was weird not having Bark River-Harris and Stephenson here. It’s fun running against them. I enjoy the close competition. It makes the races go by quicker and it’s entertaining for the fans.”

The Rapid River boys won with 156 1/2 points, followed by Norway 126 and Forest Park 84.

“We’re starting to get healthy,” said Rockets’ coach Steve Ostrenga. “Sickness hit us hard last week. We still have five guys out, but we’re very happy with the effort.”

North Dickinson junior Skye Ledzian won girls’ discus with a school-record toss of 101 feet, nine inches and shot put (30-9).

“I’ve been working on getting a faster release,” said Ledzian. “I’ve also been weight training to gain a little extra strength. I think I can get a little faster in the circle. If I can get the last part down, it could be golden.”

This marked the third victory in nine days for the Nordics, who also captured their own invitational and the Norway Invite.

“Our field events made the difference today and Masyn had a big day,” said Nordics’ coach Mike Roell. “Masyn is a special runner. She’s a hard worker who leads by example. Skye has also been working real hard this year. We’re happy for her. We had a lot of good contributions from the other girls. Everybody is pitching in and doing her part.”

Mid Pen swept the sprint relays and freshman Landry Koski won the 3200 (14:01.7) and was runner-up in the 800 and 1600.

The Wolverines ran without sophomore Daisy Englund, who was out due to illness.

“Mary McNally filled in for Daisy and stepped up in the relays,” said Mid Pen coach Lauren Marshall. “She did a nice job and Landry did real well in the distances. We always do well in the running events. We just don’t have many field events.”

Superior Central junior Danika Walters took the 800 (2:37.23) and 1600 (5:45.06).

Rapid River senior Emily Thibault won the 100 hurdles (18.24) and freshman Addie Christoff took pole vault (8-0) and Carney-Nadeau senior Talisha McCullough copped the 300s (54.71).

“It was a little chilly and we had a little wind, but I think the wind was to the runners’ benefit,” said McCullough, who may do track and field at Calvin College.

“Form is very important. I love this race. I think it’s fun. A lot of it is physical, but much of it is also mental.”

The Rapid River boys won three relays and senior Gunner Larson captured shot put with a personal-best throw of 42-10 and discus (138-9).

“That was a good job by Gunner,” said Ostrenga.

“Our distance runners ran PRs and we had two PRs in pole vault. Avery Closs is running with a shoulder injury and took sixth in the 3200. I thought our relays ran well and our field events really came through. Our fill-in guys in the 1600 relay did well.

“I appreciate the patience shown by all the teams and all the work by our helpers and Jeff Schram.”

Norway senior Mitch Legrave copped the 100 (11.46), 200 (24.02) and placed second in long jump and Dave Loomis took pole vault (12-0).

“That was the first time Dave cleared 12 feet,” said Norway coach Al Trudeau. “Adam (Loomis) also did very well in pole vault. Our relays ran good and Mitch had another solid performance. We’re going to miss our eight or nine seniors after this season. They’re such good leaders.”

Forest Park sophomore Mason Rintala captured the 1600 (5:02.67) and 3200 (11:38.97) and Dawson Bonji copped the 110 hurdles (16.95) and 300s (47.49).

Big Bay de Noc senior Alex LaLonde also became a double-winner, taking high jump (5-11) and long jump at 19-9, which is believed to be a school record.
