EBEN JUNCTION — The weather wasn’t exactly fit for baseball, but the Negaunee Miners powered their way through the rough conditions Wednesday afternoon as they swept Superior Central in a doubleheader 5-2 in the opener and 10-2 in the five-inning nightcap.

“We got two nice wins,” Negaunee head coach Jason Siik said. “That (Clayton) Smith kid they got is the real deal, so it was good that Tylor (Robinson) kept us in the game. Gerald (Johnson) also threw a no-hitter (in the nightcap) and it was nice to see a freshman do that. He didn’t have a clue he got one either.”

In the first game, the Cougars jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. SC maintained that slim advantage for the majority of the game until the sixth inning when Negaunee rallied. The Miners pushed across five runs in the top of the frame to take the lead and shut down the Cougars in the bottom to complete the victory.

Michael Potvin got the win for the Miners in relief of Robinson, giving up one hit and striking out one in one and a third innings of work. Reliever Parker Maki was dealt the loss for SC as he surrendered four runs and three hits with one walk and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.

“Ty threw great,” Siik said. “He kept his composure and he hasn’t thrown in a while, but he wanted to go. He threw strikes and the defense behind him was effective.”

Negaunee was led offensively by Adam Ogea, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Eric Anderson, who went 1 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored.

Eli Werner had two hits and a RBI for the Cougars, while Zach Englund went 1 for 3 with a run scored.

The Miners didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the second game though as they scored three runs in the first inning. Negaunee continued to pad its lead over the next three innings before SC finally answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. However, the deficit was too much to overcome for the Cougars.

Johnson struck out four Cougars and gave up one walk in addition to his no-hitter. Lucas Kanerva took the loss for SC as he lasted just a one-third of an inning, giving up three runs on two hits with one walk.

Carter Richardson led Negaunee at the plate, going 1 for 2 with two RBI and three runs scored. Anderson had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored for the Miners, while Logan Fish also had two hits along with a RBI and a run scored.

“Gerald was sharp and threw the ball hard,” Siik said. “Our catcher (Anderson) also called a good game and his experience has paid off for him. Carter also continues to hit the ball well and we hit the ball really hard as a team, which was nice.”

SC hosts Bark River-Harris at 4 p.m. today, while the Miners will host the four-team Negaunee Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
