Marinette boys take Ryder

MARINETTE — The Marinette boys golf team finished with two of the top three scores in Tuesday’s Marinette Invitational Ryder Cup meet at Little River Country Club.

The meet’s format was different from regular high school matches, with the schools dividing players into teams of two and then the golfers play six holes alternate shot, six scramble and six best ball.

Sophomore Ty Kretz and senior Matt Wagner took sole possession of second place with a 69 and seniors Chas Ferm and Wesley Knutson shot a 70 to tie for third with Pulaski’s Cade Sauer and Ethan Trewartha.

Kretz and Wagner struggled to start and went to hole number 10 with five holes to play at three-over-par. The two birdied four of the next five holes to finish with their one-under 69.

Preston Cedergren and Garrett Anderson of Bay Port just edged Wagner and Kretz for first place with their 68. Kelton Hermanson and Trey Kretz’s 77 was thrown away for the Marines, despite only having seven other scores better than them.

Marinette got a little payback for Kretz and Wagner, though, as Marinette won the overall team score by one point over Bay Port, 139 to 140. Pulaski was third (142), Escanaba was fourth (148) and DePere (158) rounded out the top-5.

“Going into the meet today, Chas and I knew we had to play well to remain undefeated for the year,” Knutson said. “After a bogey-bogey start, we finished the last 16 holes at two-under. Winning this meet and tying for third was a very nice way to finish our last high school meet at Little River.”

Luxemburg-Casco came in sixth with a 168, Menominee was behind them in seventh with 178, Gladstone came in eighth with a 202, despite being led by Rudy Peterson and Bryce Cooper’s 76, and St. Thomas Aquinas Academy was ninth with a 213.

“I think the boys would have liked to have played better but it was a new format they’ve never played in before,” Menominee coach Tony Hofer said. “This was another good tournament for them to gain good experience.”

Freshman Brady Badker and Andrew MacIntyre shot a 40 on the front and a 40 on the back to lead the Maroons with an 80, but Badker thought they left some strokes on the course and could have had a much better score.

“I thought we could have had a way better round than we did today,” he said. “We didn’t give ourselves good opportunities to make a birdie or a par which is important to do. Our short game is really what killed us, if we could’ve gotten our chips a little closer to the pins that would have helped our score a lot.”

Cooper Conway and Kade Lesperance, also both freshman, shot a 98 for Menominee and like Badker and MacIntyre, felt that they left a lot of strokes out on the course.

“It was sort of a rough day out there for us,” Conway said. “Some of the greens were faster than we thought and others were slower. I thought we set ourselves up nice for some good birdie and par opportunities but we just couldn’t convert them.”

Escanaba’s Nathan Rousseau and Trevor Denome shot a one-over-par 71 to come in with the fourth best score. Brett McDonough and Kolby Stenfors shot a 77 and Jaden Gravelle and Clayton Smith finished with a 79.

Alex Powers and Dominic Piasecki led STAA with a 101 and Kianna Bulin and Joey Pisoni shot a 112.

Marinette’s next match comes at Oconto Falls, Menominee and Gladstone are at Escanaba and STAA is at Coleman on Thursday.

Marinette 139, Bay Port 140, Pulaski 142, Esky 148, DePere 158, Luxemburg-Casco 168, Menominee 178, Gladstone 202, STAA 213.

Menominee — Badker/MacIntyre 80, Conway/Lesperance 98; Escanaba — Rousseau/Denome 71, McDonough/Stenfors 77, Gravelle/Smith 79; Gladstone — Peterson/Cooper 76, Hanson/ Borchert 126.
