Gladstone wins GNC title

MENOMINEE — The Gladstone boys maintained their championship form here Thursday, earning the Great Northern Conference title with 138 points, followed by defending champ Marquette 113 and Escanaba 44.

This marked the second league title this week for the Braves, who also captured the Mid-Peninsula Conference crown Monday at Ishpeming.

They grabbed the top three places in both hurdle races and three of the top four spots in the 3200-meter run.

“Going 1-2-3 in the hurdles really helped us and 1-2-4 in the 3200 was huge,” said Braves’ coach Gary Whitmer. “They (Marquette) tried to go after Jake (Strasler) in the 3200, but he held them off.”

Senior Adam Bruce won the 3200 in 10 minutes, 31.26 seconds, followed by freshman teammate Giovanni Mathews (10:53.08), Marquette sophomore Peyton Osborne (11:07.54) and Strasler (11:16.68).

“Adam is very consistent and getting stronger and Gio really stepped up in the 3200,” said Whitmer.

The Marquette girls edged Menominee 102-95 for the league crown. Defending champion Kingsford took third this time at 61.

“This was an exciting day,” said Marquette coach Natalie Messano. “We were tied going into the 4×4 (1600 relay). It didn’t matter where we placed as long as we beat Menominee. The girls ran their hearts out. It’s always nice to win a conference championship.”

The Redettes captured the day’s final race in 4:22.7 and Menominee was runner-up (4:25.69).

Bruce also took the boys’ 1600 at 4:41.88, followed by a trio of Marquette runners on this partly cloudy and windy day.

“I went out at 2:14 (for 800 meters) in the 1600,” said Bruce. “I was happy with that. I hadn’t gone out that fast and wanted to try it. Going 1-2-4 in the 3200 showed a lot of teamwork. It’s nice to feed off each other. We’re a family. We’re all helping each other and the coaches are helping us.”

Sophomore Calvin Thibault added firsts in the 200 (24.41) and 300 hurdles (41.88). Senior teammate James McKnight copped the 110 hurdles in 16 seconds flat and junior Luke Van Brocklin took the 400 (52.71).

“I wasn’t feeling the greatest at first,” said Thibault who went on Wednesday’s Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. “I was a little tired, but was able to come back. The 200 wasn’t my best, but I was able to kick it into overdrive in the end. In the U.P., everybody is a good sport, which makes it fun.”

Marquette sophomore Kameron Karp edged Thibault by .01 second for the 100 title and anchored the winning 400 relay (46.67).

“Our handoffs were real good,” said Karp, clocked at 11.81 in the 100. “We’re coming together and it feels good. It ended up being a good day.”

Marquette senior Raphael Millado won high jump (6-1) and long jump (20-6).

“We’re starting to peak,” said Marquette coach Kyle Detmers. “You always want to peak at the end and we’re showing signs of that. Gladstone has a great team and Gary has done a great job with them.”

Esky junior Dayton Miron captured pole vault at 13 feet.

“I was pretty close,” Miron said after taking three attempts at the school record (13-7). “I’ve got to get used to my new pole and keep moving up. The record is the hump. Once I get over that, I think it will just take off.”

Senior Kyle Gendron took shot put (42-0) and senior Gabe Smith copped discus (125-1).

“Today has been rough in a way with dropped batons and some guys out with injuries,” said Esky coach Scott Dykema. “Although, it started good. Our guys dropped 25 seconds in the 3200 relay. Gabe throwing 125 feet in disc was good and Kyle has been consistent. Our field events were pretty strong and Derek Douglas ran a personal-best (2:05.99) in the 800.”

Kingsford senior Olivia Allen collected four firsts, taking the girls’ 100 (13.6), 200 (27.79), 400 (59.96) and long jump (16-5 3/4).

Freshman Emily Siebert provided Gladstone with its lone first in pole vault (8-6) and Marquette won three relays.

Esky senior Kaitlyn Lord was runner-up in pole vault (8-0) and Courtney Boyle placed second in the 100 hurdles (16.92).

“Courtney taking second in the 100 hurdles was good and Kaitlyn taking second in pole vault was a confidence builder for her,” said Esky coach Dan DeLong. “Getting second in the 3200 relay was a nice way to start the day and Ciara Ostrenga had her fastest time of the year in the 400 (1:05.7). I thought our sprint relays did well and it was nice to see the girls get some points in the 100 and 200 in the conference meet. It was a good day overall.”
