Eskymos fall to Redmen

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Gunner Dlugas returns the ball against Marquette Tuesday at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba tennis team fell to the Marquette Redmen 5-3 here Tuesday.

Two of the Eskymos’ three wins came from singles. Christer Carne took No. 1 singles in two sets from Marquette’s Max Lastra, and Shaun Beauchamp won No. 4 singles in two sets against Ben Sternschuss.

“It was nice to see Shaun Beauchamp win in straight sets,” Esky coach Tom Penegor said. “The last time we played he lost to that player, so he played a good match.

Esky (6-6-1) dropped No. 2 and No. 3 singles to the Redmen in two sets.

The Eskymos’ sole win in doubles came at No. 2. Nathan Lord and Ryan Moreau took two sets from Marquette’s Brendan Bell and Ben Gostomski.

There was also a duel at No. 4 doubles that the Eskymos ultimately lost. Garrett Johnson and Isaac Maki took the first set for Esky, but dropped the second and third to Marquette’s Jack Francino and Casey Yaden.

“No. 4 doubles was very competitive,” Penegor said. “Unfortunately, we came out on the short end, but both of the doubles teams played some good tennis.”

The Eskymos dropped the other three doubles matches in two sets.

“The first time we played them we lost 7-1,” Penegor said. “It was nice to see that we played them closer today. It’s a good match going into the GNC tournament. Overall, it was a good day for us.”

Escanaba travels to Kingsford Thursday for the GNC tournament.
