Esky uses pitching to sweep Kingsford

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Nicole Kamin winds up for a pitch against Kingsford Tuesday at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba softball team is on track for a good weekend at the Esky Invite if it keeps playing like it did here Tuesday, as the Eskymos swept the Kingsford Flivvers.

Escanaba shut out the Flivvers 6-0 in the opener as Gabi Salo pitched a complete game one-hitter.

“It’s always nice to play a home game. Anytime we’re at home, we want to play our best softball,” Esky coach Gary Salo said. “In the first game, our intensity level was pretty high and our energy was great.”

The Eskymos took an early lead in the first on Maddy Block’s ground ball single to center to score Lexi Chaillier. Dakota Cloutier then singled to score Block to make it 2-0.

The game was quiet until the bottom of the third when Salo doubled to score Nicole Kamin and Cloutier to increase Esky’s advantage to 4-0, and it tacked on one more in the inning.

“I thought we had quality at-bats in that first game,” Flivvers’ coach Kevin Murdoch said. “We got beat 6-0, but against Gabi Salo, I think we did well. I thought we were swinging at good pitches, and I thought we fouled a lot of balls off.”

Maggie Strehlow took the loss for the Flivvers (10-6). She allowed nine hits and six runs (five earned). Strehlow also got the sole hit.

Salo earned the win for the Eskymos, striking out 14. McKenna Bullen, Block and Cloutier all collected one RBI and Salo finished with two hits and three RBIs.

In the second game, the Flivvers took an early lead, but fell to the Eskymos 11-1 in five innings.

Kingsford took the lead in the second after an error allowed Strehlow to make it home with two outs, but that’s all it would score.

Kamin led the bottom of the first off with a line drive single to leftfield. A pop-out from Salo moved Kamin to second, and a single from Ashley Sylvester scored Kamin for Esky’s first run. Escanaba collected three more runs to lead 4-1 going into the third.

The Eskymos (13-0) continued to tack on runs, scoring one in the third and four in the fourth. The game was called as Kamin singled to score Jalin Olson.

“In the second game, we had a slow start, but anytime you can get two wins you’re happy with it,” coach Salo said.

“We’ve been lucky all year with pitching.”

Murdoch was looking for consistency.

“We’re just looking for consistency,” he said. “We just came off two good games against Norway, and we wanted to take those same skills that we had on offense and defense and bring it here to play at the same level.”

Emily Curtis took the loss for the Flivvers. She struck out three and allowed 11 runs (six earned) on 14 hits. Strehlow went 1-for-2 with a run scored and Grace Richer went 2-for-2.

Kamin took the win over five innings. She allowed one run on three hits while striking out six. Sylvester finished with three RBIs, two hits and a run. Chaillier went 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs. Kamin went 4-for-4 with one RBI and three runs, and Salo, Block and Olson all finished with one RBI.

Escanaba travels to Menominee for a doubleheader today, while Kingsford hosts Menominee in a twinbill Thursday.
