Esky ties with Munising

Justin St. Ours | Daily Press Escanaba’s Ryan Moreau returns the ball against Munising Monday at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba boys’ tennis team tied 4-4 against the Munising Mustangs here Monday.

Both teams shined at No. 1 singles as Esky’s Christer Carne took the match from Munising’s Mason Schieding, 6-4, 6-4. Each set was a struggle, and the ball was unpredictable due to windy conditions. Carne took the first set off a few rounds of deuces and advantages.

The second set became tied at three when Carne dropped a shot out of bounds. The seventh game proceeded to deuces again and was taken by Schieding to lead 4-3. Carne came back to tie it up at four with a hard shot to an out of position Schieding on the far side of the court.

Another sequence of deuces culminated in Schieding’s shot going wide and giving Carne a 5-4 lead in the second set. Ultimately, after a quick back-and-forth, Schieding netted and Carne took the set 6-4 and the match.

“It was a good win for our No.1,” Esky coach Tom Penegor said. “Mason is a good solid player, and it was a good competitive match. It was good for both of them because they both had some good, long rallies. I think they both improved throughout the match, and we were fortunate that Christer was just a little more consistent. However, Mason played a nice match and is a really good player.”

Munising’s (5-3-1) Mitchell Coyne at No. 2 singles showed off his control and drop shot, finishing off Esky’s Gunner Dlugas, 6-4, 6-1.

“Our ones and twos were all amazing today,” Mustangs’ assistant coach Claudia Ban Landschoot said.

“We won all of them except at one. They had a great match. Mitchell played well. I thought he played very well at the net and moved the ball around really well.”

The Eskymos’ (6-5-1) Tom Mayville and Shaun Beauchamp won against Munising’s Lucas Westcomb and Joe Holcomb respectively in No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

No. 1 doubles ended 2-0 in the Mustangs’ favor, as Escanaba’s Travis Burch and Garrett LaMarche were into deuces and dropped the ball into the net on the disadvantage.

No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were taken by Munising, with Esky’s sole doubles win coming at No. 4. However, at No. 3 and 4, both teams battled it out. Munising took No. 3 on a super tie-break 10-7 and the Eskymos took the third set of No. 4 6-3.

“I think the two best matches of the day were at No. 3 and 4 doubles,” Penegor said. “Those two matches were very even. It could’ve gone either way; we won one and lost the other. It was so close that it was just nice to see, and it was entertaining to watch as a fan.

“It’s also good for the kids in a case like that. When they play a match so even, it tests them, and the difference is basically who wanted it more in the end. Both of the matches had a lot of pressure, and the momentum would switch back-and-forth.”

Escanaba plays its final home match against Marquette today at 4. No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles will play at the high school, No. 3 singles and doubles will be at Veteran’s Park and No. 4 singles and doubles will be at Royce Park.
