Emeralds’ boys take second at Pickford

PICKFORD — Junior Schyler Anderson helped the Manistique boys stay in contention here Wednesday as they placed second in the Web Morrison Invitational track meet.

Pickford, coached by Manistique graduate Garde Kangas, edged the Emeralds 122-109 for the title. Third-Place Cedarville scored 77 points.

Anderson became a triple-winner, taking the 400-meter dash in 54.88 seconds, shot put at 38 feet, 10 inches and discus (136-3) and was runner-up in the 100 (12.95) into a stiff south wind on this cloudy and chilly day.

“We just had a good showing at home yesterday (runner-up in Tuesday’s Manistique Invite),” said first-year Emeralds’ coach Cody Kangas (Garde’s brother). “We were a little tired from yesterday’s meet, but Schyler came back with a strong showing. We did a lot of good things. We had a couple PRs (personal records) and this was not an easy day to do it.”

Anderson, however, appeared to injure his hamstring while edging Rudyard’s Maxwell Trotter on a lean in the 400.

The Pickford girls also won with 139 points, followed by Cedarville 82, Rudyard 76 and Manistique 75.

“Jill (coach Priskorn) does a real good job with them,” said Garde Kangas, also in his first year as coach. “They’ve been in the top three in most of their meets. We have some of our boys running in events they’re not used to. We have a young team. We have only one senior, but a good group of juniors. We’re trying to find out where they fit best and squeeze as many points as we can.”

Manistique junior Alex Misniakiewicz anchored the winning 3200 relay (9:45.43) and placed second in the 800 (2:18.59) and 1600 (5:09.9).

Senior Ashley McDonald led the Manistique girls with firsts in high jump (4-6) and pole vault (6-6).

“We had Ashley stop after she won pole vault and high jump,” said Emeralds’ coach Amy Nixon. “We didn’t want to risk an injury. Today wasn’t a good day to go after PRs. The girls were a little tired and we didn’t run everything like we normally do, but everybody gave a good effort. We did pretty well, overall.”

Taking second for the Emeralds were senior Cat King in pole vault (6-0), juniors Emilee McDaniel in the 800 (2:53.17) and Lenna Smith in high jump on a tie-breaker (4-6) and Ashlyn Eslinger in shot put (27-3).

“It was fun,” said King, who has been invited to wrestle at Adrian College this fall. “The wind was pretty gusty. It was nice when we got here, then it turned cold after a while. This is my first year in pole vault. This has been quite a learning experience, but I’ve cleared seven feet this year. We got 22 points in pole vault today. I think we did well.”

The Emeralds resume in Friday’s Munising Invitational.
