Melchiori dies

ESCANABA — Former Ironwood High School football coach Wayne Melchiori died Dec. 28 at a nursing home in Shakopee, Minn.

Melchiori, 88, was a three-year varsity football player for the Michigan Wolverines and received the Fielding H. Yost Award. He was an all-state football and basketball player at Stambaugh High School.

He compiled a 98-43-4 record as a football coach at Ironwood High School from 1959-76 and was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1982. He was inducted into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.

A nephew-in-law is Barry Pierson of St. Ignace, a former UM football star and UPSHF inductee.

games are reset

ESCANABA — Monday’s entire area athletic schedule was erased because of bad weather, and some of the postponements have already been rescheduled.

In boys basketball, Carney-Nadeau will visit Big Bay de Noc tonight, Escanaba will host Menominee Wednesday, North Central hosts North Dickinson Friday and Mid Peninsula goes to Superior Central Feb. 6.

In girls basketball, Manistique will host Engadine tonight.
