Mid Pen routs Big Bay de Noc
GARDEN CORNERS – Kennedy Englund scored 23 points and sister Daisy had 19 to lead Mid Peninsula to a 57-26 Skyline Central Conference win over Big Bay de Noc here Friday.
Mid Pen’s full court pressure defense in the first half contributed to 20 Big Bay turnovers.
The Wolverines led 26-11 at halftime and the Englund’s each scored 10 first half points.
“We wanted to put pressure on them and it led to the turnovers,” said Mid Pen coach Phil Croasdell. “Both Englund’s played great and they have been playing well for us. They hustle and play hard and no matter what the score, they play wide open.”
Big Bay de Noc started two eighth graders in their first varsity games and Black Bear coach Jenna Bradshaw said turnovers were key in the defeat.
“We were ready for it (full court pressure) but we had 20 turnovers in the first half that really hurt us,” said Bradshaw.
“I started two eighth graders tonight (Piper Jones, Alix Bleau), their first games at the varsity level for us. Once we ran our plays we were o.k., but getting all those turnovers early got us behind. Mid Pen came out with a lot of intensity and they are really good and athletic.”
Mid Pen had a 31-15 edge in the second half and the Englund’s filled up the stat sheet in the victory. Kennedy had seven rebounds, six steals and five assists and Daisy totaled five rebounds, four assists and six steals.
Senior Holli Stapleton led the Black Bears with nine points and 15 rebounds.
“Stapleton is tough for them and has been for many years,” said Croasdell.
“Big Bay is a young team and they are scrappy. We had three girls playing sick and the flu is going around the school. We got to play a lot of players tonight.”
Mid Pen (2-1) hosts Bark River-Harris Tuesday. Big Bay (0-2) hosts North Dickinson Tuesday.
