C-N girls drop opener

CARNEY — A solid defensive effort wasn’t quite enough for the Carney-Nadeau girls Tuesday night as they dropped a season-opening 42-33 basketball decision to the Forest Park Trojans.

Forest Park led 21-13 at halftime of the Skyline Central Conference match-up.

“I thought we did well for our first game,” said first-year C-N coach Kris Blahnik. “We played good defense, but we didn’t do the greatest with our shooting. That’s something we need to work on.”

The Wolves hit just 27 percent of their field goals and committed 12 turnovers.

Mercedes Simmons led the Trojans with 15 points and Dalas Loehr hit 13. Sandra Boulton scored 12 for the Wolves.

“Mercedes is strong inside,” said coach Blahnik. “The Loehr girl hit three 3-pointers in the second half, and it seemed like they came when they really needed them. We came within four points a couple times in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get out of the hump.”

The Wolves, who won the jayvee game, host Stephenson Friday.
