Mid Pen rebounds to slip past BR-H spikers

ST NICHOLAS — Mid Peninsula bounced back from a tough defeat last week by sweeping Bark River-Harris here Monday.

The Wolverines took the match 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-23) and jumped out to sizeable leads in the first two games before winning a hard fought struggle in the third.

“We played really good,” Wolverines coach Emily Kayser said.

“There was lots of hustle all over the floor. Our goal tonight was to be aggressive at the net, and I thought we were. I told the girls we just needed to take it one point at a time.”

Mid Pen jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first game before facing some adversity in the second. After going ahead 24-17, the Broncos rallied off four straight points to force the Wolverines to call a timeout.

The Wolverines were able to secure the victory after the timeout, but that momentum the Broncos had gained carried into the third game as they led for most of it.

With the score tied at 23 all, the Wolverines were able to score the last two points to complete the sweep.

Kennedy Englund had a huge night to lead Mid Peninsula (5-4), recording a team-high 10 kills to go with four digs and two aces. Daisy Englund had 16 assists and two aces, while Elli Paulsen chipped in with 11 digs and three aces. Camryn Croasdell also had a complete game, recording six digs, three aces, and two kills.

BR-H suffered its third defeat on the season.

“We were playing way too slow,” Broncos coach Brooke Jorasz said.

“In our victories we were recording 30-40 kills a game, and tonight we weren’t even close to that. Our communication wasn’t very good and we just couldn’t sustain any momentum.”

BR-H will host Stephenson Thursday, while Mid Pen plays at Big Bay de Noc Wednesday.
